  1. TOKUGAWA IEYASU: Founder of the 
  2. TOKUGAWA SHOG. Tokugawa Ieyasu was a 
  3. member of the MINAMOTO clan and a retainer 
  4. of ODA NOBUNAGA, a candidate for the 
  5. shogunate. When Oda Nobunaga was 
  6. assassinated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, 
  7. Tokugawa changed his allegiance and even 
  8. had himself appointed guardian for 
  9. Toyotomi's young son and heir. He declared 
  10. war on rival warlords, intent upon winning 
  11. the shogunate for themselves, defeating them 
  12. at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1603. As the 
  13. most powerful man in JAPAN, Tokugawa then 
  14. appointed himself SHOGUN and proceeded to 
  15. eliminate his rivals. In 1605 he abdicated the 
  16. shogunate in favor of his son, thereby 
  17. establishing a dynasty and freeing himself of 
  18. the duties of state so that he could consolidate 
  19. his family's new-found power. In 1615 he 
  20. eliminated the last members of Hideyoshi's 
  21. family, thereby ensuring his family's reign.
  22.     Although he was initially tolerant of 
  23. foreigners in JAPAN and even encouraged 
  24. trade with England, Tokugawa grew 
  25. suspicious of the growing Japanese Christian 
  26. population, which he could not count on for 
  27. support. In 1614 he outlawed Christianity and 
  28. destroyed the country's churches. Tokugawa 
  29. himself was an ardent Confucianist, who 
  30. organized his son's government on strict 
  31. Confucian principles. (See also Japan article).
